For those days when you aren't that hungry .. the world's smallest noodle bowl and noodles.

In this Dec., 2006 photomicrograph released Thursday, May 29, 2008 by The Nakao Hamaguchi Laboratory of the University of Tokyo, a 'carbon nanotube ramen' in a bowl with diameter measuring one-thousandth of a millimeter (one-25,000th of an inch) produced by the university's mechanical engineering Prof. Masayuki Nakao and his students in a project aimed at developing nanotube-processing technology is shown. 'We believe it's the world's smallest ramen bowl, with the smallest portion of noodles inside, though they're not edible,' Nakao said. The microscopic bowl was first created in December 2006, but was only revealed Thursday after it was entered for a microphotography competition this month.(AP Photo/The Nakao Hamaguchi Laboratory of the University of Tokyo, HO)
I was never a big Fluff fan, but who can resist seeing factories? We once played hookey from work to go to the Jelly Belly factory and Budweiser Brewery. So, if you are at all nostalgic for Fluff, view the tour inside the 50 yr old factory.
We stumbled upon the second weekend of the Japantown Cherry Blossom Festival. This visit will lead to one next year, if not to catch the parade, to taste the most popular treat, the Takoyaki .. you buy them in baskets of 4 balls and can get as many as 20. They are like tiny filled pancakes. The guys making them were working fast and furiously to feed the constant line of about 100+. We found out that traditionally they are made with octopus, but this stand uses ground beef instead. They smelled wonderful and we will be back!. We did not see any blossoms however.
In a recent NY Times article on small batch dairy production ... please note the caption.

"Nancy Nipples sells the products of independent dairies at the Pike Place Market in Seattle."
Yes, you read correctly.
Kauai's biggest rivalries may be food stands, not team sports. Shave ice is the biggest, with small trucks island-wide claiming to be the best-on-Kauai. The next is burgers. Here are our pics for these categories.
Shave Ice Winner: Wishing Well, Hanalei (not even a close second: Jo-Jo's, Wiamea) You need sharp blades to shave the ice, and most importantly, really great flavors made with love and care, and in Wishing Well's case, tiny bits of lemon zest in the lemon flavor. yummmmm.
Burger Winner: Duane's Ono Char Burger, Anahola (close second: Bubbas - two locations, Kapaa and Hanalei) BUT, Bubba's has the best chili cheese fries on the planet, so don't be so bold as to pass them up completely.
Are they calling your name too?
So, you know how you get those catalogs in the mail that when you see the cover you go "How in the hell did I get on *that* mailing list?" Or, "Whew -- that one is addressed to you, HA HA!" Well, we got one of those the other day, the good news is that it was mistakenly put in our mailbox instead of our 80 yr old neighbor's mailbox.
It was from the Vermont Country Store and I could not resist flipping through the pages. It had all of those things that you think no one would ever buy ... weird arch supports, fanciful print house coats, random "mice-be-gone" things, etc. Well, I have to say that against my better judgement, I actually ordered something from it -- both food items from our childhood. I cannot wait till the whole old fashioned tin of Charles Chips arrives at our doorstep in a few days.
But I will leave you with one final thought: can you imagine the catalog list I am going to be on from this day forward? We are going to have to hurry up and move so they can't find us. Then the neighbors will be wondering who lived her before them as they would be getting both our Victoria's Secrets catalog and the oldster catalogs as well.
